Masters of Cinema: Orson Welles

Orson Welles (USA, 1915–1985) is a legendary figure. A consummate filmmaker, brilliant director and screenwriter, as well as an actor of extraordinary screen presence, he made his directorial debut in 1940 at the age of 25 with Citizen Kane, an undisputed masterpiece that marked a turning point in the history of cinema.

His reputation as a “baroque”, impulsive and fiercely independent artist made him an uneasy fit within the studio system. He maintained complete creative control over every detail of the twelve films he directed, including The Lady from Shanghai (1947), with Rita Hayworth; Touch of Evil (1958), with Charlton Heston; adaptations of Shakespeare such as Macbeth (1948) and Othello (1952); and Kafka’s The Trial (1962).

Orson Welles remains a unique figure in the history of cinema and an enduring source of inspiration for future generations of filmmakers.
