Masters of Cinema: Federico Fellini

Federico Fellini (Italy, 1920–1993) was a major figure in the history of cinema, who created his own highly personal and baroque cinematic language. 

Fellini is considered one of the most distinctive and influential filmmakers of the twentieth century. Beginning as a screenwriter before moving into directing, he developed a highly personal cinematic language that blended realism, memory, fantasy and spectacle. His early films were closely associated with Italian neorealism, but works such as La Strada (1954) and Nights of Cabiria (1957) already revealed the emotional intensity and visual imagination that would define his career.

With La Dolce Vita (1960) and 8½ (1963), Fellini established himself as an international figure and transformed ideas about what cinema could express. His films became increasingly autobiographical and dreamlike, filled with elaborate sets, eccentric characters, theatrical imagery and a fascination with performance, desire, celebrity and memory. Later works including Juliet of the Spirits (1965), Fellini Satyricon (1969) and Amarcord (1973) extended this richly imaginative style.
